Common questions

How do I log a visit?

Open Places → My visits, or choose Log a visit in a place guide. Add a day or date range, whales seen and notes. Map → My visits shows your visited places. Place pins still open their guides. Open a visit to edit or delete it.

Where are my personal sightings?

Open Sightings → My sightings. Personal entries stay on your device. WhaleWise does not publish them or synchronise them between devices.

Why are no whales showing nearby?

Public observations are incomplete and can be delayed. Try a wider area or time range. Seasonal guides describe typical patterns; sightings are never guaranteed.

How do tour links work?

Open a place and choose its tour search. Check availability, sea conditions and responsible-viewing practices directly with the operator. WhaleWise does not take bookings or payments.

What works offline?

Download a regional overview map while connected. Places, seasonal guides and your journal remain available. Live observations and tour websites need internet. Downloaded maps use a light basemap.

How do I remove my data?

Delete entries in My sightings or My visits, unsave places using their bookmarks, and remove downloaded regions in Offline maps and guides. Deleting the app removes local data; offloading preserves documents. Manage device backups separately in Apple settings.

Do I have to enable location?

No. You can choose locations manually. Near me and Use my location request optional permission. Change it in iPhone Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → WhaleWise.
